Geology is more than just the study of rocks and minerals. It has a very important place in our society, as it is used in decision making and planning all over the world. Geology is important to the siting of transportation facilities and structures such as buildings, dams, roads, and tunnels. Knowledge of geology is crucial in helping to prevent and reduce damage from geological hazards such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods and landslides. It also forms the foundation for the mitigation of those hazards when they occur. Geological principles are used extensively in developing our water resources, both surface and subsurface. When our environment becomes polluted, knowledge of geology is important in cleaning up the soil and/or the groundwater. This book presents 69 papers that discuss how geology has been or can be applied to our lives. It is a collection compiled by the Oregon Section of the Association of Engineering & Environmental Geologists presented at the 1997 AEG Annual Meeting in Portland, Oregon in October, 1997.
