TITLE: Landslides in Paradise: Case Histories of Landslides near Delaware Water Gap, Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania

The area around Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania is known as an area of great beauty, with towering cliffs overlooking deep river and stream valleys. Part of the scenery found there is due to past glaciations, which can be susceptible to landsliding. Two sites will be discussed during this talk, one located in the Delaware Water Gap Recreation Area (Route 209 Slide), and one to the south of Stroudsburg along Cherry Valley (S.R. 2006). The sites are similar in that they are located in glacial sediments on the side of retreating glaciers, and both are being eroded at the toe by meandering water courses. Extreme weather events were involved in both events and the underlying bedrock geology is believed to have contributed to the development of the slides. The similarities and differences in the two slides are discussed, as well as complications involved in the proposed repairs.

Dan Martt, PG is a Project Geologist with American Geotechnical & Environmental services, Inc. (A.G.E.S., Inc.) He has 39 years experience in subsurface investigation, in-situ testing, and geologic research in major transportation projects. He has been a member of AEG for 26 years and recently attended the AEG Conference in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he presented a talk on the Cherry Valley slide repairs (research conducted with Adam Marolf, PE, A.G.E.S., Inc.)
