Greetings AEG Southern California Chapter Member

We hope you will join us for the AEG Southern California's November meeting to be held at Cisco's Mexican Restaurant, in Westlake Village, Tuesday, November 14th. The presentation will be by Darrin Hasham, Senior Engineering Geologists at Kleinfelder.

Darrin has been with Kleinfelder for over 15 years working on a variety of Engineering and environmental sector projects. For the past 8 years or so Darrin has been an active member of Kleinfelder’s Tunneling and Underground Construction Group.  As a member of the Tunneling and Underground Construction Group Darrin has had the opportunity to work on a variety of tunneling projects that include utility tunnels such as sewers and water conveyance tunnels. Darrin has also been involved with some major transportation tunnel investigations that have yet to be built. Recently, Darrin served as the field operations manager for a feasibility study for a major transportation tunnel through the San Gabriel Mountains. The field campaign for this study took almost exactly one year to complete, and involved drilling 6 rock core borings to depths between 600 and 2,700 feet deep in remote locations. The study also included a variety of in-situ testing to assess the conditions at the proposed depth of tunnel.

Darrin’s presentation will provide an overview of the work performed, some of the challenges that had to be overcome, and present how the data collected is used to communicate the subsurface conditions to the client and contractors.

Mr. Hasham received his Bachelor’s degree in geology from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and his Master of Science degree from California State University, Los Angeles.

Please see below for meeting information including whom to RSVP.

Presentation Topic: Data Acquisition and Presentation for a Transportation Tunnel
Kleinfelder was tasked with assessing the feasibility for a transportation tunnel through the San Gabriel Mountains. The feasibility study included drilling 6 rock cores in mountainous terrain to depth ranging from 600 feet to 2,700 feet. The field campaign lasted for one year and encountered a variety of challenges related to the remote locations, difficult access, and a variety of weather conditions. In addition to the cores being logged to assess the geomechanical properties of the rock additional testing was performed to assess the conditions at the proposed tunnel depth. The additional testing included packer testing to assess hydraulic properties; collection of groundwater samples to assess connectivity of deep groundwater zones with the shallow aquifer; and in-situ stress conditions within the intact crystalline bedrock. Instrumentation was installed in the core holes to allow continued data collection and assess fluctuation in groundwater conditions. The presentation will also include some examples of data presentation which will aid prospective contractors in their own assessment of the conditions for bid purposes.
